Informal letter

An informal letter is quite uncommon these days as most people prefer to communicate with each other over e-mails. But there are people all over the world who still enjoy the art of letter writing. Informal letter writing can be sent to the recipient, usually a close friend or a relative. It can be saved even because of sentimental value, tucked away in a special box or stapled on a scrapbook. Let us now look at the informal letter format as per CBSE guidelines.

Things to remember while preparing an informal letter format for CBSE

While writing an informal letter to a parent or an elder, “respected mother/father/parent” can be used. But nowadays, “dear mother’father/elder” is commonly used.

These letters can be written to friends, cousins as well as family friends. Usually the letter is started with “dear ___________)

Adhere to the point of the letter while writing the main body of it. An informal letter, like any other, has its own word limit.

Keep it brief while telling about the main incident clearly and definitively.

The informal letter format has three parts:

An introductory paragraph

The main body

The conclusion

Elements of an informal letter

Address:

Your personal address should be located at the top left corner of the page, this is because you do not always know if someone has your address just in case they want to reply to you.

Always make sure that you write the name of the country that you are writing from.

The recipient:

Usually, the address of the recipient of the letter (to whom you are writing the informal letter to) is written on the envelope after it is sealed.

Date:

In a number of countries, people will insert the city where the letter is being written from. India is included in those list of countries.

The date is, as a rule, written below your own address. Just leave one line below it blank, and write the date. The month, day and year are the standard things to mention.

Body:

The contents of your letter should be written in a personal and gracious tone.

However, it’s essential to adjust your use of language to the person you are writing to.

A good way of assessing how you should write is to think about how you would relate and interact with each other in real life.

In the first paragraph of your body, you should state your reason for writing the informal letter.

In the second and following paragraphs, expand on what you mentioned in the first paragraph.

In the final paragraphs, you can make some concluding remarks.

Opening:

Openings should be casual as it is an informal letter, not stiff and business-like.

Some examples include:

How are you?

How have you been doing?

I hope that you are doing well.

How is life treating you?

6. Ending:

It should be conclusive in nature and end well.

Please remember to never be abrupt in an informal letter.

Some examples of good endings include:

I am looking forward to meeting you soon.

See you soon.

I can’t wait to hear from you.

I hope to be hearing from you soon.

7. Signature:

Here, signature implies about how you end the letter and not that you actually sign it.

Some examples include:

Lots of love.

Yours lovingly

Love.

Best regards
