How to Write the Personal Response
A personal response essay is an essay in which, guided by prompts, you are expected to draw upon your own experiences and create a PERSONAL ACCOUNT of a specified topic.
A personal response is written in PROSE. Of course, PROSE is the ordinary form of written language, without rhyme or meter.
This being said a PERSONAL RESPONSE may take the following forms:
1)Creative (a story, a script, a rant, a speech etc.), 2)Analytical, or
3)Personal
You must NEVER choose to write a POEM. Absolutely NOT allowed.
You must ALWAYS include reference to the texts. This means that you must somehow prove that you have read the excerpts provided and will INTEGRATE a portion of them into your text.
HOW? you ask …
Some reminders and step-by-step instructions to tackle that tricky response
This aspect of your Personal Response is where your creativity as a writer comes into play.
You can: use specific words, use characters from the excerpt, or use the plot of the excerpt
Just Remember…
However you choose to incorporate text, it must be done in a COMPETENT, CONTROLLED, FLUENT way!!
Remember, you need respond only to one text, but the connection to the text must be clear to your audience.
When considering the prose form that will best communicate your ideas, ask yourself the following questions:
What prose form will allow me to communicate my ideas and impressions most effectively?
What prose forms have allowed me to communicate successfully in the past?
Have I been able to master a creative approach? Are my skills better suited to a personal (creative) or analytical (essay) composition?
What prose form will best suit the ideas I want to present to the audience?
How can I use language and develop my ideas to make my writing communicate effectively?
Using the sample Personal Response please follow the steps below. As I read the instruction please follow it:
1. Always start by reading the question at the back so you know what you will be writing on (Don’t forget to look at the “freebies”, or what are in italics, on the assignment page!)
2. Highlight key words in the question and define them.
3. Brainstorm these key words (Ask yourself all the levels of "Why?" until you come up with your "Aha" idea).
4. Read the texts provided to you and glean all the information you can. Be sure to highlight or jot ideas that you see within the texts.
5. Add any new ideas to your brainstorm sheet and circle ideas that overlap.
THE NEXT FEW MAY NOT OCCUR IN THIS ORDER!
Step #3 - How do you do it?
6. Decide on a format for yourself (analytical, creative or personal). Don't just go with what is familiar, but what would really get your ideas across.
7. What will you use as supporting evidence? Will you use the text prompts provided, or your personal life stories or a character and his/her situation?
8. Decide on a thesis statement and write it so that it is clear and easy for your reader to understand. Make sure it answers the question (all parts) and contains some key words from the question.
9. Decide how you will connect to the text prompt (if is analytical this is easy, but what if you are doing a personal approach or a creative approach?)
10. Fill out your planning page!! This is especially important with a creative piece.
11. WRITE!
12. EDIT and possibly peer edit.
