A report is a written description or an account of an event, function, and stuff of that sort. You can also have business reports, newspaper reports and reports on science experiments.
A report is never an essay. A report is different from an essay in many different ways.
Characteristics & (How different from an essay?):
A report is always factual and will not contain the personal opinions of the writer. Also, a report is not a continuous piece of writing like an essay is.
What are the contents in a report? What things is a report written based on?
The contents in a report varies, according to the type of the report.
Whatever its contents might be, a report is always (written) -
1# based on facts.
2# well-planned.
3# arranged in the proper sequence.
4# written in the third person (preferably).
5# drafted and redrafted to make a final copy.
How to write a report? Steps / Ways of writing reports :
To write a report, you have to be careful about including all the points a report is based on.
Remember, this is not an essay you will write. It's a report! You should always the differences among reports and essays. That's why, to know the differences is important.
1. You should not, firstly, start writing for the final copy. You should make a draft copy and state the main ideas, you will include in your report. Then, make several other drafts, you will make mistakes, edit them; and, finally you will get to the final copy, neatly-arranged and properly checked. Drafting is what that makes a report well-planned.
The report must be based on facts. You can't include stuff that did not take place or is not true. It must be true. Unlike an essay, where you can make up anything, in a report, you should write truly - based on true facts.
You should never include your personal opinions. Like, whether you liked the setting or disliked it.
It must be arranged in the proper sequence. For instance, you are to write a report of an marriage ceremony, and you write that the guests eat, at first, and take pictures with the bride and bridegroom, later; which is not completely true, the sequence of the events are not properly arranged. It makes a report weak, in nature.
The report should maintain the serial of events. It should be chronologically arranged.
Lastly, you should maintain the use of third person in the report.
With all these steps, you should be able to write a well-drafted and neat report.

b. Date/Time/Place

Then give the date when you are writing it (say for example:-1st January,2016).
