How to write a space story?
You already know you are trying to create a story in space. Earth could be included as a place, but the story will not take place on Earth. To start, think about:
What planets will be involved in your story?
Will there be a main planet? Which one?
How do people travel?
What kind of races and peoples exist on the planets?
What kind of creatures exist? Are they domestic or wild?
What are homes like? Are they different on different planets?
Do the planets have capital cities? What are they called?
Do the planets have small towns? Farms? Big cities?
What type of government is on the main planet? Does it extend to the other planets?
What currency is used?
What occupations are there?
What else?
The questions will help create a universe for the story.
Character matters
You have a lot of choices when it comes to characters in outer space.
Start with a main character and decide:
What is their name?
What do they look like?
What people or race are they part of?
Where do they live?
What do they do for work?
Who is in their immediate circle of family or friends?
What is important to them?
Does the story have a villain?
What is their name?
What do they look like?
What people or race are they part of?
Where do they live?
What do they do for work?
What is their goal?
If you want the main character to have a sidekick, friends, coworkers, family, neighbors, or other characters beside them, jot down some ideas for those using similar questions. Do the same for the villain. Is there a henchman or does he/she have a family?
Shift to the story idea
The plot might be based on one event, a series of events, solving a problem, or a strange situation. Some options for a conflict to drive the plot include:
A fight between good and evil is taking place
Someone is lost and the main character must find them
Something important is stolen
A drought on a planet is causing a food shortage
Base the main idea off one of these or think up another main idea. Once you have that big idea, you need to build on it. Answer story questions for:
Beginning: How does the story start? How does the main character encounter the problem?
Middle: How do the characters decide to solve the problem? What obstacles occur in trying to resolve the problem?
End: Do the characters accomplish their goal? How?
Write, write, write
Organize the ideas on the page. Eliminate the ones which made the idea weaker and highlight the stronger ideas. Consider writing the first chapter of the story or a scene which sticks out in your mind.
