It is a general belief that economic dependence of women is a major obstacle to their empowerment. Women’s participation in the labor force is, therefore, regarded as an index of their empowerment. It is believed that economic independence gives them personal autonomy and the power of decision making. Studies have shown that a decline in their employment adversely affects their fertility, mortality, and nutrition. Viewed from this angle, women of the lower strata can be considered as empowered because most of them work as labour, not only in their private homes, but also as paid workers – maid servants, labour on daily wages, and women employed in salaried jobs – both skilled and non-skilled. But there are also a sizeable number of women who are out of the labour force.
