This concept is one of the most fascinating ones in science. Scientists in the past have scratched their heads a lot on this issue,but in vain. Though some progress have been made in this field but not enough to achieve it in real life (for humans). But time travel into the future can be achieved if a body is accelerated to the speed of light, which wont essentially be time-travel but time will just slow down for the accelerated object (Time dilation). Because the faster we start to move in space, the slower we start to move in time.
But we cannot time-travel into the past because it has a lot of complications and paradoxes for eg:- The Grandfather Paradox- which is that if you go into the past and kill your grandfather, you will never be born which means you will never go into the past and your grandfather will be alive. So your grandfather will both be alive and dead at the same time. A possible solution of this paradox is given in the youtube channel “minute physics” by the name “solution to grandfather paradox”. The people who are interested can go watch it because a little bit of extra knowledge wont harm anybody but yeah the video is a bit complicated.
“Interstellar” is one of the really good movies on this concept of time-travel or technically speaking time-dilation, in which the astronauts go to a planet in which if you spend a hour, you will spend 7 years on Earth, at the end of this movie the astronaut comes back only to find his daughter lying in her deathbed (dying from old-age). I highly recommend you guys to go watch it, albeit it gets boring at some points but the movie has Anne Hathaway if that helps anybody.
So coming to the question now. Will i go in the past or in the future? So considering that time travel into the past is also possible, i would still go to the future. Because in the future if i do something it wont have any consequences on my present but if i do something as little as moving a rock in the past, the consequences on my present could be deadly as in i might not even be born because of i moved a rock in my past. For clarity on that, you can go search “THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT” and find out how small things happening as a chain of events lead to happening of huge things for eg if a butterfly flaps its wings in South-africa, it may lead to a cyclone in America. So going to the past is gonna require a very high amount of cautiousness because of the consequences of that on the present and moreover changing stuff in the past changes what you really are in the present which is never a good thing because the people that love you for who you will be very disappointed with that. So i myself would like to take a tour of the future and would recommend you guys to do the same.
