Deforestation, many of us have heard this word right? And we all know its meaning too. Deforestation is the cutting of trees on a large scale for various purposes. But why deforestation occurs? Deforestation occurs because the humans need wood, timber and forest products for various purposes such as to make furniture, build houses, tables and chairs, and many other things. Wood pulp is used to make paper and it takes 17 fully grown trees to make one tonne of paper!
Deforestation is a major environmental threat to our mother earth. Deforestation causes soil erosion, desertification, landslides, floods, global warming, and air pollution. Forests are the lungs of the planet earth. But if trees are cut down, then from where will we get oxygen? This may lead to global warming and air pollution. It may also lead to drought and desertification because it is the trees only who help keep the climate cool and bring rainfall down to earth. Trees also give us fruits and vegetables, so what's the point of cutting them? As a part of nature, we should respect our planet and the wildlife including trees.
A question now arises, how can we control deforestation? We can control deforestation by reducing the wastage of paper, telling the people to stop cutting the trees, planting the same number of trees as the number of trees which has been cut down. Changing attitude towards the environment and encouraging the people to take care of their own environment. The best way to slow down the rate of deforestation is by following the five Rs, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse and Recover.
