let \:  \: the \:  \: number \:  \: be \:  \: x \\ the \: student \: is \: asked \: to \: get \\  \frac{ (\frac{x}{2}) }{6}  +  \frac{ (\frac{x}{2}) }{4}  =  \frac{x}{12}  +  \frac{x}{8}
but \:  \: he \:  \: did \:  \frac{x}{5 }   \:  \: which \: is \: of \: 4 \: short \\ of \: correct \: answer \\ so \: equation \: becomes \\  \frac{x}{5}  = ( \frac{x}{12}  +  \frac{x}{8} ) - 4
Solving this, x = 480
