How do I make notes from NCERT?

I’ll assume you are not a school student and you want to make notes out of NCERT’s for some competitive exams and not for the board exams. Now,

Notes are pointers to what you studied and found useful. So keep these in mind while making notes:

Keep it concise.

May be a page for a chapter or a page for a book according to your need and how much time you think you’ll have when you revise them. I make one page note for every book I read(both sides; I use loose A4 pages and keep them in envelopes one for each subject).

2. Use more diagrams

Use diagrams, flowcharts, tables and timelines etc wherever you can. Skip details (they’ll pop up in your mind while revising if you read the book even once with concentration). As I said notes are pointers to what you have studied.

3. Manage your time

Always keep track of how much time you take in completing a book and making notes for it. Skip introductory parts of the chapters, stories in boxes and activities etc(as they are meant for children the books have explanatory conversations, activities and stories etc which you won’t need- Strictly skip them).

4. Know the content of a book

Before reading a book go through the content of the book i.e. name of the chapters. According to the syllabus of the exam you are preparing for you might not need some of the chapters or a whole book maybe. Save your precious time there.

5. Concentrate

Last; concentrate on what you read. Don’t read NCERT books like a novel or a story casually. They are meant for development of a child’s mind. You have to just skim through most of the part(not the part with real content though). Find what’s useful and quickly take note of keywords, concepts, key events dates personalities etc.

That’s the way I do it. You can start this way and develop your own method which works best for you. Before you know you’ll be finishing one or two NCERT books on a daily basis.
