A paragraph may be an independent composition

of it may be a part of a longer composition. An essay

is made up of a number of paragraphs. If you want to

master the art of writing an essay you must first master

the art of writing a paragraph. Normally a paragraph

com- prises a number of sentences, Sometimes, even

a single sentence can be a para- graph must express one complete idea. There is no rule regarding the length of a paragraph. There are long paragraphs and short paragraphs. The length of a paragraph depends upon the convenience of the communicator. In the past, writers like Milton wrote long paragraphs. Later, they began the convention of writing short paragraphs. The modern trend is to write short paragraphs though even now many modern writers write long paragraphs.

(1) Unity :

A paragraph must have unity of thought. That means, it must express one single idea. All the sen- tences in the paragraph must be related to that central idea. Each sentence in the paragraph must say something new about that central idea. There should not be a single sentence in the paragraph which is not related to the central idea. The sentences in a paragraph may be explanatory of expository or descriptive or narrative but they should be related to the central idea, A paragraph must possess this kind of unity or oneness of thought.

(2) Logicality :

We should remember that a paragraph is not a mere combina- tion of sentences. If some sentences are Jumbled together in a disorderly manner, they do not make up a paragraph. There should be logicality in a paragraph.

(3) The beginning and the end :

The beginning and the end of a paragraph are of great importance. They should be striking. The first sentence must capture the attention of the reader. If it is the first sentence of the first paragraph of an essay, it must suggest or state the central idea of the essay in an introductory manner. If it is the first sentence of a paragraph in the middle of an essay, it must take up the next step in the argument, Similarly the final sentence in a paragraph must be striking. If it is an independent paragraph, the last sentence must give a conclusion to the argument. If it is the last sentence of a paragraph in the middle of an essay, it must conclude the argument of the paragraph and suggest the next step in the argument.

(4) Variety :

Variety is a necessity in composition. All paragraphs should not be in the same tone. If they are so, they sound monotonous. There should be variety in the tone of each paragraph. There should also be variety in respect of length.

1. Think about the subject given to you and write down all the points as they come to your mind. See that all the points are strictly related to the subject.
2. Arrange these points in a systematic order.
3. If you think it proper, begin your paragraph with a topic sentence suggesting the central theme.
4. Develop your subject in well-connected sentences.
5. Give variety to your sentences. They should be neither too long nor too short. They should have different patterns.
6. The last sentence of your paragraph should give the impression that you have clearly said all that you wanted to say. Try to frame the last sentence as impressively as you can.
7. Since a paragraph has one central idea, it is brief.
