★Identify the cation (positive, metal ion) and anion (negative, nonmetallic ion).
★ Write the compound as "cation+ anion+ide". NaCl become sodium chloride.
★ If the metal is the transition metal count the nonmetallic atoms to find the charge. Fe2O3 has three O atoms so Fe become Fe3+.
★ Use Roman numerals to show the charge: Fe2O3 becomes "Iron (III) oxide".
★ You can instead add "-ous" to the metal name for the lower charge state, and "-ic" for higher charge. Fe2+ becomes "Ferrous" and Fe3+ becomes "ferric".
