Job application letters are usually formal letters. However, for this case, since the one applying knows the principal and has been a student at the same school, the letter should blend a formal style with a slightly personal touch. The personal style is used so as to bring to the principal’s attention, your association with the school.

As an overview, the letter should take a one page format with a professional appearance and should not be a repetition of your resume but should complement it. It is essential to point out that in as much as you obviously possess a lot of information about the school, be keen to only include information that is relevant to your application. Be careful not to cram too much information into your letter.

Within the letter, ensure you focus your letter to the employer-the school. Since you know the school, outline how you are going to be beneficial to the school. Give a short description of how you are going to make a positive contribution to the school based on your skills set. In other words, tailor your letter to the school. The reason for this is, there are likely to be many applications for the post and as such the principal cannot appoint you solely for being an old student, in addition to being an old student of the school, you need to prove that you will be a valuable addition to the institution.
