The fact that it is the only planet that we know of where life, and the conditions that are necessary for it to emerge and thrive, exist. It is unique as far as our Solar System goes. Our neighboring planets, Venus and Mars, are at the inner and outer edge of the Sun’s habitable zone (aka. “Goldilocks Zone”) where conditions are neither too hot or cold for life to exist. However, due to a runaway Greenhouse Effect, Venus’ atmosphere has become extremely dense and its surface is a hot and hellish environment where no life could survive.

Mars, at the other end of the zone, has an atmosphere that is too thin to keep the surface warm, the surface is far too cold, and it is subjected to too much solar and cosmic radiation. Beyond Mars and the Asteroid Belt, what is known as the “Frost Line”, conditions are so cold that volatile elements (like hydrogen, water, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia) either condense or freeze solid.

Beyond the Solar System, we have to find a planet that boasts the same conditions as Earth. While several “potentially-habitable” planets have been identified out of the thousands of exoplanets discovered, we are unable to say with any certainty that these planets can (or do) support life. In the future, it will be easier to make this determination once next-generation telescopes are sent to space - like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It will give astronomers the ability to study the atmospheres of rocky planets around other stars, which is key to determining whether or not they have the necessary ingredients for life as we know it.

The words, life as we know it, are key here. Until we find other examples of life in our Solar System or beyond, we really have no idea what other forms life could take. So not only might Earth not be unique in its ability to support life, the type of life we find out there may bear little resemblance to our own.
