Apartheid is a word in Afrikaans language for apartness or discrimination.  Black people were restricted to a few areas and they had to take permission of whites for living or working in certain areas in South Africa.  Black were not allowed to marry whites, they could not buy land in places reserved for whites and they were not allowed to vote in elections.
