Christopher Columbus went on a voyage to find a sea route to India. But he ended up on reaching America. Thus, he named it West Indies. Although America was discovered by him, it was not named after him. It was named after Amerigo Vespucci, the great French explorer who had started his voyage to visit the so-called 'New World' discovered by Columbus.

Hope this helps. Please mark this the brainliest.
