When Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago from a hot mix of gases and solids, it had almost noatmosphere. The surface was molten. As Earth cooled, an atmosphere formed mainly from gases spewed from volcanoes. It included hydrogen sulfide, methane, and ten to 200 times as much carbon dioxide as today's atmosphere.

The entire universe is full of , in fact made up of gases , dust.
When dust and several gases solidified and the earth cooled , the gases where liberated.
These gases mostly comprised of hydrogen , carbon dioxide.
Oxygen is basically a toxic gas which undergoes oxidation but the plants let out oxygen and we had to get adapted to oxygen.
