He's predecessors followed religious tolerance and maintained friendly relations with Rajputs.But he was an orthodox god-fearing Muslim.He kept on his battle with marathas although that caused loss of manpower and money. he never looked after his subjects.he grew unpopular among people when he re-introduced jaziya.

but unlike other rulers.who took monet from treasury to lead their luxurious lifestykle,aurangzeb sewed caps and copied quran to sell to run his livelihood
