Explanation: Anna`s advice to her sister Bama.

  • Anna was the elder brother of Bama, who had come home for holidays.
  • Bama was disturbed by what she had seen while returning home from school.
  • The behaviour of the landlord towards the elderly man left her anger.
  • Anna explained him the reason for such behaviour on the landlord part as the elderly person belonged to a lower caste.
  • He further explained that since they too were born in a community of untouchables as a result it becomes very difficult to gain respect, honour, dignity and recognition from other castes.
  • He advised her sister to study hard to achieve dignity as well as friends and thus put an end of being exploited in the hands of others.
  • His piece of advise worked like magic for Bama who later stood first in her class and even make many friends.

Hope this helps.

Annan is a thoughtful and considerate elder brother. He guides her properly and explains the social stigma of untouchability. He told that the elder carrying Vadai was not amusing but pathetic. He was the victim of social prejudice. Bama became angry and annoyed Annan guides her in right direction. He believe that people of their community should study and outshine others to earn respect in society. Bama follows his timely advice and grows up to be a balanced and well respected individual of the society.
