The Catholic churches authorised the clergy with the status of First Estate of Realm and empowered as the largest landowner and hence had control of all the properties and collected huge revenues from the French tenants. However, they did not pay any tax.

The churches also collected tithes, which mean one-tenth part of anything should be paid to the religious organisation, in this case, the churches.  

The churches enjoyed the complete authority of the French and acted as the monarchy.
