Answer. Coal we use now was formed about 300 million years ago,when much of the earth was covered by steamy swamps.As plants and trees died,tgeir remains sank to the bottom of the swampy areas,making layers of plants material and eventually firming a soggy ,thick material called PEAT.

Coal is formed when dead plant matter decays into peat and is converted into coal by the heat and pressure of deep burial over millions of years.........
