Plants and other life forms, after their death, drifted down to the bottom of the swamps, where they were compressed and decomposed to form peat. Coal was formed due to the compression of the peat at high temperature and pressure. As coal was formed from the remains of vegetation, it is also called a fossil fuel.

Steps in coal formation

plants decay.

peat is formed.

peat changes to lignite (soft brown coal made from peat)bituminous coal is formed (black and brittle and very polluting)anthracite coal is formed (highest amount of carbon and clean burning)

the energy is coal comes from energy that was stored in giant plant that lived hundreds of millions of year ago in swamp forest, even before the dinosaur! when these giant plants are ferns died, they formed layer at the bottom of the swamps . water and dirt began to pile up on top of the dead plant remains.
