In the olden days most farming took place near water bodies where water can easily be transported otherwise canals were built so that water can reach where water is not readily available. Animals like bulls were used for the purpose of loosening the soil to make it suitable for cultivation. Tools like axes were used to clear forests for space. Sickles and knives were used to harvest the corps later on.
