Answers
Food security is ensured in any country only if the 3 dimensions of food security is taken care of-
1) Availability of food.
2)Accessibility of food.
3)Affordability of food.
How exactly is India ensuring food security?
•India initiated the Green revolution and Wheat revolution(gradually replicated this for rice as well) for Increasing the self-sufficiency of foodgrains within the country.
•The food security is further ensured by a government run food security system which has 2 components-buffer stock and PDS.
Buffer stock- The stock of foodgrains collected by the govt. through FCI.
FCI collects these stocks from the farmers belonging to surplus states in exchange of a pre-announced price(MSP)
These food grains are distributed to the deficit states with an Issue price (price lower than the market price).
PDS- It is a system of distributing foodgrains to the people in lower price through govt. regulated ration shops (or fair price shops).
•Other initiatives and food intervention programmes enhancing food security are-
AAY - antyodaya anna yojna, which targets on providing subsidised food to the poorest of the poorer (BPL)
APS- Annapurna scheme, which targets on the needy senior citizens.
AAY and APS is related to the Targetted PDS or TPDS.
FFW -Food for work
Mid-day meals in schools
ICDS - integrates child development services
Employment programmes
PAPs - poverty alleviation programmes
•Cooperatives like ADS in Maharashtra, Amul dairy (mainly in Gujarat), and Mother dairy in Delhi also plays an important role in enhancing food security.
