the system of estates in France society was organised. Peasants made about 90% of population. however, only a small number of them own the land they cultivated. 60% of land was owned by Noble, the church and other rich members of third estate. the members of first two estates that is the clergy and the nobility, enjoy certain privileges by the birth. most important was paying tax is the only third estate was used to pay the tax but the first Two States where enjoying their feudal privileges of not paying taxes.
The church to extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the present, and finally all members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state. this includes a direct tax, called taille, and a number of indirect taxes which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone.
