The french society was divided into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd estate respectively . the first estate-clergy and second estate- nobility enjoyed certain privileges by birth. the main one was exemption from paying taxes to the state. The nobility also enjoyed certain feudal dues like the peasants had to work i n their houses or fields, to join the army or to participate in building roads. The clergy collected a tax called tithes from the pasants which included 1/10 of the agricultural produce.
