Green Revolution

Definition:

The Green Revolution in India refers to a period when Indian agriculture was converted into an industrial system due to the adoption of modern methods and technology such as the use of high yielding variety seeds, tractors, irrigation facilities, pesticides, and fertilizers. It was mainly found by M.S. Swaminathan.

Introduction:

The Green Revolution was introduced in 1960. Farmers used High Yield Variety (HYV) seeds. HYV seeds bring more Yield than the traditional seeds on the same amount of land. HYV seeds, however, require more water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Methods:

Farmers of part of Northern India were the first to be introduced to Green Revolution. They set up tube Wells and used HYV seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. They even used machinery like tractors and combines, which made farming activities faster.

Outcome:

In Northern India, people were rewarded with high Yield of wheat, on practising modern farming methods. In Palampur, the people, who used to get 1300 kg Yield per hectare with traditional farming methods, are now getting at the same amount of land 3200 kg Yield, thanks to HYV seeds. Now farmers have extra surplus to sell to the market and can earn more income.
