The Communist Party of Nepal was formed in 2006 BS ( 1949 AD) in Calcattua, India by Pushpalal Shrestha, the younger brother of Martyr Gangalal Shrestha. They participated in the uprising that overthrew the 104 years old Rana Oligarchy. This mother party split into numerous factions and groups often competing with each other and Nepali Congress (the socialist democratic party ), which was and is still the major political force in the country ever since it was founded. Nevertheless, the communist presence in Nepal has always been strong. The communist movement gave some popular leaders like Pushpa lal Shreshta, Madan Bhandari, Manamohan Adhikari, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda.
Communist parties collectively played major roles in the referendum of 2036 BS (1980 AD), the democratic movement I of 2046 BS (1990 AD) and the democratic movement II of 2062/63 BS (2005 AD ). A small group of radical communists called Communist party of Nepal- Maoist (CPN-M) started an armed uprising in 2052 BS (1996 AD) . They fought the police and later Nepal Army. In their heyday they controlled almost 80 % of the country and ran a parallel government. They enjoyed popularity and support in the rural parts of the country for more than a decade. This popularity was reflected in the first constituent assembly elections, as they became the largest party. Together with Communist of Nepal - Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and other small parties, communist had more than 2/3 lawmakers. The communists had a clear majority.
In the second constituent assembly election, CPN-UML became the second largest party and CPN-M the third largest. Still, a major presence of communists. While Nepali Congress has been a mass party. All of the communist parties are cadre based. Nepali Congress is generally perceived to be a party of the feudals, landlords, rich, elites, and former monarchists; and pro-India, and capitalist in orientation. Communist parties are generally anti-India (at least in the appearance and Ideology ) and target the farmers, laborers and poor people. And , the majority of the population is comprised of such people.
Nepali Congress breached the 'gentlemen's agreement' and filed Sushil Koirala as the prime ministerial candidate, its image has vastly eroded. Nepalis have developed a liking for their current PM Mr. KP Oli, as they believe that he didn't gave in to Indian pressure (economic blockade ), and stood tall and strong. He belongs to CPN-UML. I believe CPN-UML will win more seats in the next election due to his current popularity.
Communists parties of Nepal, although communist in name only are here to stay for sometime. I think they will become social democratic parties in the long run.
