Emperor Ashoka was referred to as "Beloved servant of the Gods" or Devanampiyadasi in his inscriptions. An inscription was discovered by C. Beadon who was a British gold-mining engineer in 1915. This inscription found at Maski, a village in Raichur district of Karnataka, confirmed the identification of Devanampiyadasi with Ashoka. Another minor rock edict was found in Gujarra village in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh which shows the name 'Ashoka' along with 'Devanampiyadasi'.
