Judaism became intertwined with the culture of the Hebrew/Israeli/Jewish people due to unique historical circumstances which bonded the religion with numerous occurrences of persecution and oppression. These themes are present throughout the history of Judaism, starting with its founder and patriarch, Abraham, and his decision to enter into a covenant with God, making them His 'Chosen People'. The fusion of culture and religion was further solidified by periods of suffering for the Jews, including their captivity in Egypt, expulsion by the Babylonians, the destruction of the Temple by the Romans, the Diaspora, and many other historical examples. The lessons from these events became inseparable with the teachings of Judaism, and created a cultural element which still exists today after 3,500 years
