How was M.Hamel as a teacher?

M.Hamel in ‘The Last Lesson’ is shown to be a strict teacher according to little Franz’s account. In the very first paragraph of the lesson, he says he is afraid of his scolding as he is late to school. Later when he comes to know about the order from Berlin he forgets his teacher’s ruler and his ‘cranky’ behaviour. There’s a mention of Hamel’s ruler in another instance when Franz finds the school unusually quiet.
