The snow was lying just there on the branch of a poisonous tree (hemlock tree) in that cold and bleak evening. It took a dark bird, usually associated with negative energy to bring the white snow to the poet. He realised that even the negative elements in nature can produce a result which is ultimately good, and thus negativity or positivity both are transient in nature and changes like the phases of moon. That gave him heart and saved some part of the day.
