Mahatma Gandhi designed the Swaraj Flag in 1921. ... It represented the Gandhi an ideal of self help. The three colours of the flag stated that red stood for the sacrifice of the people, white for purity and green for hope. Carrying the flag, holding it aloft, during marches became a symbol of defiance.
