3rd estate comes under the local population It consisted of the rest of the population ie, businessmen merchants, court officials, lawyers, peasants, artisans landless labour etc. They had no privilege, they had to pay direct taxes called Taille to the state as well a number of indirect taxes levied onarticles of everyday consumption, ike salt, tobacco etc. Peasants made up about 90 per cent of the population on France.
