The bicycle as an inseparable part of Sudheer Babu's life
In the story ' The Bicycle' by the famous Oriya writer Dash Benhur, is a heart touching story.
The short story is based on the forty year attachment of a retired English College teacher, 'Sudhir Babu' with his bicycle.
Sudhir Babu had possessed it at about the same time as his marriage to his wife Rajani. It was a sturdy ,green bicycle made in England of the Humber brand with twin forks.
It had a German bell on the handle-bar, the sound of which could be heard across the neighbourhood. It also had a Lucas dynamo that served as a powerful flash light.
Sudhir Babu was greatly attached to it. He called it by various names such as Veersen, Prithviraj. There were many memories associated with it. These included carrying his wife on it for rides, taking her urgently to the hospital for the delivery of their first born child, going to the forest for a picnic with seven of his friends where the bicycle saved their lives by flashing its powerful light, carrying bagful of shopping and going to the college for work.
All these memories made the bicycle an inseparable part of his life. He wrote several poems on it which won him many awards and it was the memories of the bicycle that supplied him the theme of his poems.
