The Mughals invaded the Ahom kingdom under Mir Jumla in 1662, and the Ahoms were defeated despite their valiant defence.

The Ahom state relied on forced labour and the ‘Paiks’ were forced to work for the state.

By rotation, each village had to send a number of paiks, and people were transferred to less populated places from densely populated areas, thereby breaking up the Ahom clan.

The government became very centralised during the first half of the seventeenth century and virtually all adult males served in the military during the war.

They were interested in building dams, irrigation systems and other public works, and new rice cultivation techniques were also implemented.

The society of Ahom was divided into clans or khels.

A Khel also had many villages under his influence.

The peasant was granted land by the people of his village and even the king could not take it away without the permission of the community.
