The episode of horseshoe crab was a great lesson for Helen in many ways.At first, Helen finds it strange that the crab carry his house on his back and thought he would make a delightful pet.
She forces the crab by siezing him by tail and brings it home.
She forces Miss Sullivan to keep the crab safely somewhere and Miss Sullivan eventually put the crab in a trough near the well. Helen, confident that it was an secure place, get shocked the next day to find that the crab has escaped. She gets disappointed but slowly Helen learns the lesson that it was not kind or wise of her to force a poor creature out of his element. Helen did felt happy afterwards for the fact that the crab might have returned to the sea.
