The method to take the preliminary examination was not very complicated. The candidate was to pass the examination in sixteen hours- twelve hours being called elementary and four advanced. He/She had to pass five hours at  a time to have them counted. The examination papers were given out at nine o'clock at Harvard and brought to Radcliffe by a special messenger . Each candidate was known by an allotted number.
Helen was given a special room so that her typewriter on which she was to write her answers did not disturb the other girls. Mr. Gilman , the principal of Cambridge School , read all the papers to her by means of the manual alphabet. After she had written her answers , Mr.Gilman would spell to her what she had written her answers, Mr.Gilman would spell to her what she had written so that she could make necessary corrections .
Afterwards, Mr.Gilman sent her written work to the examiners with a certificate that she ( candidate no. 233) had written the papers.
Helen was able to pass every subject offered by her , and received 'honours' in German and English .
She could not do so well in the finals simply because no one was allowed to read her written work to her for making corrections.

hope this helps...
all the best....
