SOLUTION:
STRUCTURE OF CHAWL:
Chawls were multistoreyed structures which were built in Bombay first in the 19th century. Like the tenements in London these houses were largely owned by private landlords who were mostly merchants, bankers and building contractors. They were seeking quick ways of earning money from the large mass of migrants. Each chawl was divided into smaller one room tenements which has no private toilets.
FAMILY LIFE IN CHAWL:
Many families could reside at a time in a tenement.High rents forced the workers to share homes either with relatives or acquaintance coming into the city. People usually have to keep the windows in rooms closed even in humid weather due to the close proximity of filthy, gutters, buffaloes stables. Filthy atmosphere & scarcity of water was very common in Chawls. The Homes were small ,so streets and neighborhoods were used for cooking, washing and sleeping.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL CHANGE ON THE FAMILY LIFE:
Liquor shops & akharas came up in the vacant spaces. Streets were also used for recreational and leisure activities. Generally there was a open space in the middle of four Chawls . The monkey players, acrobats and magicians used to regularly perform their acts. Chawls were places where exchange or news about Jobs or strikes took place. The changed social life or community life was responsible to bring changes in the family life of the worker. Old system of caste based family life was slowly replaced by the new urban life.
