The French society was structured on the relics of feudalism and followed the Estate system before the French Revolution – the First estate, the second estate, and the third estate.

Explanation:

  • The peasant, wage labourers, and bourgeoisie comprises the third estate. They account for over 96% in society. They are devoid of any political or economic power.
  • The nobles comprise the second estate. They account for 1.5 percent of the total population in the country. However, this class is divided into magisterial class (the royal justice administration) and civil government, traditionally.
  • The first estate comprises of the clergy. They account for only 0.5% of the population. And they used to give their part of owned land to the peasants in return of crops they grow.
