the french society was divided into:-
1st estate- clergy
2nd estate-nobility
3rd estate-peasants and artisans.
1st and 2nd estates had many privileges. they were exempted from taxes and were considered as the priviledged class of the society. they owned 60% of the land and constituted 10% of the population.
3rd estate-considered as the underpriviledged section of the society. they constituted 90% of the population. they had to carry the burden of taxes and never had political or social rights.
