The Indian landmass was once a part of the supercontinent called gondwana. In fact india was the southern most part of the gondwana. Then it drifted apart from the gondwana landmass. As it drifted away it also hit the Eurasian landmass that created the great himalayas.
All this was because of tectonic activity of the plates.
