Separate Electorates was one of the term which was put forward by the Muslim league in the Lucknow pact. First we need toh know the meaning of separate electorates, it refers to the voting population of the country, divided into different electorates based on the factors like religion, caste, occupation etc. For example, it meant that Muslim voters could elect Muslim representatives. By accepting separate electorates for Muslims, the Congress lost its secular character and paved the way for future communal tension.
