The last ruler of Mughal Dynasty was Bahadur Shah Zafar II.
Zafar was a nominal head, put by Britishers on the throne. His father, Akbar II wanted to put Mirza Jahangir on throne but since he attacked the British resident in Red Fort, he was exiled.
He ruler over only Delhi with limited powers in his hand. He was a weak ruler and lived according to Britisher’s wishes.
He was made the leader of 1857 revolt in Delhi by sepoys. The mutineers were in control entire time, though he could have done something but he let them control the situation.
After the revolt was done, Bahadur surrendered himself. The first thing that Britishers did to him was take his two sons, Mirza Mughal and Mirza Khizr Sultan and his grandson, Mirza Abu Bakr. They presented their severed heads to him later.
Zafar was tried and found guilty on four counts:
1) Aiding and abetting the mutinies of the troops
2) Encouraging and assisting divers persons in waging war against the British Government
3) Assuming the sovereignty of Hindoostan
4) Causing and being accessory to the murder of the Christians.
