Mahalwari system:
Mahalwari system was one of the main revenue systems of the British in India.
Holt Mackenzie and Robert Merttins Bird started this system in 1822. In this
system, the land revenue was collected by the village headmen, and it was not fixed. The peasants were the owner of the land, and every peasant had to give his share of the revenue.
Permanent settlement:
Lord Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement of 1793 in Bengal.
Zamindars were recognised as the owners of the land and revenues were
collected by them. They were to pay a fixed amount which was permanent and would not change in future to the government. The zamindar would stay the
owner as long as he paid the fixed revenue at the said date. This system was introduced in Bengal, Orissa and Bihar.
