this settlement was introduced in 1739 by lord Cornavallis. To ensure a regular income, the company dicided to fix the land revenue known as Permanent Settlement.

Mahalwari System

In areas where land was commonly owned by a group of villages, called 'mahals' . The task of collecting the revenue and paying it to the company was given to the head of each mahal . Along with this the revenue demand was not fixed permanently, but could be revised periodically.
