The
medieval period is defined by a loss if technological skill and increase
in superstition. It ends as a renewed interest in scientific and
philosophical thought start to take hold. There is less agreement on
when the medieval period ends than with the ancient period. Some date it
to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Others, to the colonization of
what became the Americas. Another choice is the beginning of the
renaissance but that has its own set of complications. The
modern period begins when the medieval period ends. As with the ancient
period, the modern period is best characterized by the flowering and
growth of science, technology, literature and art.
