Answer:I have no qualifications but i study economics. That being said to my knowledge the industrial revolution created the modern middle class and whilst i am unaware of any version found in the ancient civilisations (Egypt, Babylon, Rome etc.) the modern version came from industrialisation. Pre industrial revolution almost all wealth came from agriculture therefore wealth would be passed down from the lords of farming estates and remain within these dynasties. Some would own far more farming estates than others making them more powerful lords. The system of Monarchs evolved from this and usually would start with the wealthiest lords electing another lord to govern in order to settle all disputes. The industrial era blew the lid off this system because it allowed wealth to be found in far more trades than ever before and whilst past merchants could become part of the merchant class which was like the middle class, there were far less of them because the variety of goods were scarce. Factory production meant that all manors of goods could be produced and those who worked within them would form the working class, however because the factories were new no dynasties owned them. Therefore many people form the old peasant class would build and own factories and the goods from them becoming wealthy middle class members.
