The Soviet Union was one of the world's leading producers of cereals, sugar, potatoes and flax were some of the major crops cultivated. Agriculture in Soviet Union was organized into a system called collectivization.
Collectivization in the Soviet Union was enforced with the aim to consolidate individual land and labour into collective farm. The Soviet leaders were confident that the replacement of individual peasant farms by collective ones would increase the food supply for urban population. this would result in increased supply of raw materials for processing industry. They also expected a rise in agricultural exports. the Soviet union considered Collectivization as the solution to the crisis of agricultural distribution.
However despite immense land resources, extensive resources the Soviet agriculture was relatively unproductive due to the climate and poor worker productivity since the collectivization. However lack of transport infrastructure further caused much waste and resulted in poor performance of Soviet collective farming and resulted in distress of collectivisation
