There was a barber who belonged to a family of musicians. He wanted to try n modify the pungi which produced a shrill n unpleasant sound. He started off by taking a hollow stem n making 8 holes in it. And the stem that he used was much broader n longer than the pungi. He blew on the stem n it produced soft n melodious sounds. He presented it infront of Royals. N since it was first played in the royal chambers of the shah n it was played by a barber (nai), it was named the "Shehnai".
