In India, the caste system is called jati,. The word jati is used in almost every Indian language & "is linked to the idea of kinship or lineage group. There may be more than 3,000 jatis in India & there is no one "all-Indian system of ranking" them in "order of status". However, the ranking of Jati is very much connected with pureness and pollution in every local area.
Explanation:
- Each "jati "has some "unique job", however, not everyone in the jati performs it. A "jati" is defined in a "local community", from which its members receive food and water from & to which their members provide food and water. People would seek to marry their sons & daughters to the same jati members and give their jati their greatest allegiance. A jati is usually organized into a "biradari" (a Brotherhood), carrying out the business and manages the work of the jati & has the power to evict any "offender" from the jati.
- The jati system is not "static" wherein all groups remain in the "same position". There is "mobility" in the "system" & jatis have "changed" their position "over" the "centuries" of "Indian history". Nevertheless, the jati moves up the "social scale" as a group & not as individuals. A jati can enhance its position in the" class system" by "advancing economically" & "emulating social groups" with "money & power". Besides, a jati can "move-up" in the "caste hierarchy".
- A "lower jati" copies the behaviors of the "dominant jati" in the area to take a place in this process. It could lead to a lower jati changing its name to higher jati, adopting strict religious tradition, becoming a vegetarianism, builds temples and provides a more traditional treatment of women. The type of emulation depends on the copying of the dominant jati. When Jati will win recognition its new identity, for its new background and for its new status, it marries its daughters to members of the Jati of which it wants membership.
